“Gemütlichkeit” is an old German word which means a wonderful sense of
well-being. You can experience this feeling in a variety of ways -- such as when
relaxing on a sunny beach in late Spring, or walking through a field of wild flowers on a pleasantly warm early Fall day -- or possibly when riding in a hot-air
balloon. |
Perhaps you've never experienced the floating effect of drifting gently in the air on a warm summer day. But it's easy to imagine, isn't it? What could be more
relaxing and enjoyable?
Unfortunately, the sense of “Gemüthichkeit” seldom carries over to the dental office experience. Many people have great difficulty relaxing or enjoying any sense
of well-being while visiting the dentist.
However, today's modern approach to the delivery of dental care makes it quite possible to receive treatment without tension and anxiety! Now you can receive
a sense of well-being in the dental chair through the use of a mild, non-narcotic inhaled tranquilizer.
The use of tranquilizers has long been accepted as an aid to overcome temporary periods of distress. The uncomfortable mental attitude sometimes associated
with receiving dental care is easily eliminated today by the use of Tranquilizing Air. |
What Is Tranquilizing Air?
Tranquilizing Air is a pleasant-smelling mixture of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen. By
breathing this pleasingly aromatic substance, you receive the combined effect of
easy relaxation and comfort, with safety and reliability.
In our office, you are provided with your very own Personal Inhaler “nose” (available in several fragrances, or “unflavored”) to take home and bring back with
you to use each time you come in for a treatment visit, or even for a Hygienist “cleaning” if you wish.
(Many people keep their “nose” in the glove compartment of their car, so it is always ready...) Of course, if you happen to forget it at home -- we'll just give you another!
If you have not experienced this type of treatment -- and this kind of feeling -- in a dental office before, you may be in for a real treat!
The almost universal comment made by patients on first experiencing Tranquilizing Air is, “Why didn't someone tell me about this before?” (Not every
dental office is sensitive to these concerns or offers this option.)
The second most frequent comment is, “I’ll never have dental care again without it!” |
|
Patients often ask two questions regarding this type of treatment:
|
|
“Will the use of Tranquilizing Air complicate any physical or medical condition?”
Except for certain lung function problems such as Emphysema, and a specific eye
disorder called “Acute Closed-Angle Glaucoma”, there are no known cases
involving complications. This includes patients with histories of heart trouble. In fact it is better for them, because it reduces tension and gives two to three times
more Oxygen than normal room air. This additional Oxygen offers even further protection and eliminates any chance of “hangover”. (Patients who are known to
be pregnant are advised to avoid Nitrous Oxide as part of their general precautions.)
“What effect will Tranquilizing Air have on me after I leave the dental office?”
The physical effect is eliminated within a few minutes, since the experience is completed by breathing pure 100% Oxygen for about five more minutes, clearing all
the Nitrous Oxide from your system. So, you can safely drive and return to your normal duties after your visit. If you should ever experience any apparent
difficulty, simply call this to the attention of your doctor or the dental assistant at chairside.
Comfortable dental care is now available to you in a much more relaxed atmosphere by the use of Tranquilizing Air.
Though you will be aware at all times of what is going on (unlike the more invasive and more risky total sleep of general anesthesia) you will be far less concerned
or worried about it, and you will be able to “separate” yourself from what is happening. Anxieties and tensions will fade away in the first session or two, and (in
most cases) will be entirely eliminated from your future dental visits. Indeed, it is not unusual for a patient who uses Tranquilizing Air to actually look forward to
his/her next dental experience with pleasant anticipation! |
